Gathering the powerful forces of ten soloists, multiple choirs and two orchestras, Bach tells the story through text from the Book of Matthew, German poetry, and chorales. On the occasion of the centenary of the first performance of the St Matthew Passion in Aberdeen in 1912, Peter Parfitt, Musical Director of Aberdeen Bach Choir, has prepared a musical commentary on the work with the text (in German) and translation into English. Mendelssohn enjoyed early success in Germany, and revived interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, notably with his performance of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. Bach's St. Matthew Passion is a transcendental work, firmly footed in the Baroque, but with substantial freedom of interpretation. The performances of the St John Passion will come one year after lockdowns began in Europe due to Covid-19, during which time we have been broadcasting a cycle of Bach’s liturgical cantatas, introduced by the singers and instrumentalists who took part in a ground-breaking exploration of Bach’s vocal music, the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage in 2000.
